Title : Wealth-in-colleagues: the economy of favours among Accra’s professionals

Abstract :

In Ghana’s capital Accra, young professionals invest significant resources in their colleagues. This moral economy of favours in and out of their private sector workplaces connects colleagues to each other’s family lives, money troubles, and aspirations of professional success. Drawing on twelve years of ethnographic engagement with a network of young men and women formally employed in Accra’s media and finance industries, this presentation explores professional career as a co-operative achievement that comes into being as a result of social investment. By zooming into the daily labour, exchange, and moral tension that characterise the (uneven) career trajectories in Accra, I further interrogate the new kinds of work subjectivities emerging in the private sector in Africa, where corporate metrics of measuring individual performance often exist in tension with practices premised upon work-sharing.
