Building Instant History or Dividing a City: “Skopje 2014” and Macedonian and Albanian ethnonationalist mobilisation

Abstract :

Macedonia is a country of longstanding diversity threatened by ethnonationalist mobilisations. Responding to the identity denials launched by Greece and Bulgaria in particular, the ethnonationalist leaders turned to the remaking of the capital’s city symbolic landscape into a 3-D historical textbook. Exploring the limits of the materialisation of nationalist ideology in the public space by using ethnographic evidence, I will show that Skopje is not becoming a divided city but rather that the traditional cohabitation and coexistence can prevail.
