Title: Asian migrant spouses in Japan: Migration and reproduction in an ageing society
Abstract:
This presentation will examine the nexus between the immigration of women through transnational marriages to Japan and the issue of reproductive workload in a rapidly ageing society, or even in a society under a process of depopulation. Working from a definition of reproductive work which includes both paid and unpaid work, the article first places the case of female marriage migration in regards to Japanese migration policies concerning the sector of care work. The hypothesis is that, in a country where care work is less externalized and where immigration opportunities for care workers are limited compared to the neighboring countries, marriage migrants may have been an alternative to fill a need in workforce. Secondly, based on empirical case studies, the article examines if concretely the migrant spouses have fulfilled or not some expectations in terms of reproductive work.
Bio:
Hélène Le Bail est chargée de recherche au CNRS et au Centre de recherches internationales (CERI) de Sciences Po Paris. Elle est affiliée à l’Institut Convergences Migrations. Docteure en science politique/relations internationales, elle est aussi diplômée en langue et civilisation chinoises (Inalco). Elle a été chercheuse à la Maison franco-japonaise de Tokyo (CNRS-MAEE) et chercheuse invitée à l’université de Kobe. Ses travaux portent sur les migrations asiatiques au Japon et en France dans une perspective comparée. Un intérêt plus particulier est porté aux routes migratoires féminines (mariage, travail reproductif et travail du sexe), ainsi qu’aux questions de mobilisation, d’action collective et de participation politique. Elle coordonne le projet ANR PolAsie (Participation politique des populations issues de l’immigration asiatique en France) et co-coordonne le projet JSPS (Japon) “Rethinking the Nexus Migration and Sex Work trafficking”. Elle a publié avec Khatharya Um “Générations post-réfugiées. Les descendants de réfugiés d’Asie du Sud-Est en France” (2023) et avec Ya-Han Chuang “Faire reconnaître le racisme anti-Asiatiques : la construction d’un problème public par la voie judiciaire” (Marronnages, 2022).
